J. Arthur Myers and community leaders founded The Glendale Symphony Orchestra Association in 1924. Early on, the orchestra participated in a great concert at the Hollywood Bowl that brought together all the community choruses of Southern California. This auspicious beginning set the stage for many decades of acclaim.
The Emmy-award winning Glendale Symphony is one of the oldest, continuously operating arts organizations in Southern California, performing great music. Since becoming a professional organization in 1957, the GSO has been led by a series of famed conductors including John Williams, Carmen Dragon, Henry Mancini, Andre Previn, Bill Conti, Lalo Schifrin, Sidney Weiss, Norman Henry Mamey and currently Olivia Tsui. The orchestra was a resident company of the Music Center of Los Angeles County for 30 years, until its move in 1995 to the beautifully restored and acoustically excellent Alex Theatre in Glendale. In the year 2000, the orchestra accompanied the Three Tenors at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and Luciano Pavarotti in Los Angeles and Palm Desert performances.
Beyond its annual performances at the Alex Theatre, the Glendale Symphony has a far-reaching impact in the Community. Largely driven by an active
35-member Board of Governors and a committed Women's Committee of more than 100 members, the GSOA
provides scholarships and brings music education to over 15,000 students each year.
Programs include Ensembles in the Schools, Music Student Scholarships, Final Rehearsal Invitational Program for Music Educators and Students, Free tickets for the Blind and Underprivileged Children
and Families, Arts for Kids Programs,
Music Mates and Young Musicians Academy.
